چکیده

We show an isomorphism between packet scheduling in crossbar switches and circuit switching in three-stage Clos networks, using the concept of rate quantization. We use the analogy for a crossbar switch of size n×n to construct a simple packet scheduler of complexity O(n logn) based on maximal matching. We show that, with this simple scheduler, a speedup of O(logn/ log logn) is necessary to support 100% throughput for any admissible multicast traffic. If fanout splitting of multicast packets is not allowed, we show that an extra speedup of 2 is necessary, even when the arrival rates are within the admissible region for mere unicast traffic. Also we revisit some problems in unicast switch scheduling. We illustrate that the analogy provides useful perspectives and we give a simple proof for a well known result.

Starvation Free Scheduler for Buffered Crossbar Switches (RESEARCH NOTE)

Need for high speed internet connectivity has lead to a substantial research in switching systems. Buffered crossbar switches have received a lot of attention from both research and industrial communities due of its flexibility and scalability. Designing a scheduling algorithm for buffered crossbar switches without starvation is a major challenge as of now. In this paper, we proposed a Delay ba...

Multicast Traffic Scheduling Based On High-Speed Crossbar Switches

The tremendous growth of the Internet coupled with newly emerging applications has created a vital need for multicast traffic support by backbone routers and ATM switches. In this paper, we first introduce the multicast traffic scheduling problem. We focus our study on the multicast traffic scheduling in crossbar based input queued (IQ) switches. Due to the centralized scheduling complexity in ...

Throughput analysis of shared-memory crosspoint buffered packet switches

This paper presents a theoretical throughput analysis of two buffered-crossbar switches, called shared-memory crosspoint buffered (SMCB) switches, in which crosspoint buffers are shared by two or more inputs. In one of the switches, the sharedcrosspoint buffers are dynamically partitioned and assigned to the sharing inputs, and memory is sped up. In the other switch, inputs are arbitrated to de...

On Service Guarantees for Input Buffered Crossbar Switches: A Capacity Decomposition Approach by Birkhoff and von Neumann

Based on a decomposition result by Birkhoff and von Neumann for a doubly substochastic matrix, in this paper we propose a scheduling algorithm that is capable of providing service guarantees for input-buffered crossbar switches. Our service guarantees are uniformly good for all non-uniform traffic, and thus imply 100% throughput. The off-line computational complexity to identify the scheduling ...

Scheduling Multicast Traffic in a Combined Input Separate Output Queued Switch

Although several promising multicast solutions have been proposed till now; however, the support of multicasting still remains notoriously difficult for switches or routers in networks because of the traffic expansion due to multicast replication. In this paper, we propose to use a Combined Input Separate Output Queued Switch (CISOQ for short) to achieve high performance when loaded with multic...
